In 2008, college football's winningest active coach, Frank Beamer, founded a literacy foundation that promotes reading to youngsters in their formative years. Named for his mother, a teacher for more than 25 years, Herma's Readers has delivered over 21,000 new and used books collected at Virginia Tech football games to youngsters throughout the Commonwealth. Currently, Coach Beamer's program has also dispersed more than $100,000 for new book purchases for children. That is a total of more than 58,000 new and used books.
"The research is there, and it's clear" Beamer said. "If we get students passionate about reading at a young age, it benefits everyone. Research shows that children who are actively reading by third grade are more likely to be on the right track to graduate".
